چکیده

This paper describes a numerical discretization of the compressible Euler equations with a gravitational potential. A pertinent feature of the solutions to these inhomogeneous equations is the special case of stationary solutions with zero velocity, described by a nonlinear PDE, whose solutions are called hydrostatic equilibria. We present a well-balanced method, meaning that besides discretizing the complete equations the method is also able to maintain all hydrostatic equilibria. The method is a finite volume method, whose Riemann solver is approximated by a so-called relaxation Riemann solution that takes all hydrostatic equilibria into account. Relaxation ensure robustness, accuracy and stability of our method, since it satisfies discrete entropy inequalities. We will present numerical examples, illustrating that our method works as promised. Copyright c © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A New Implicit Dissipation Term for Solving 3D Euler Equations on Unstructured Grids by GMRES+LU-SGS Scheme

Due to improvements in computational resources, interest has recently increased in using implicit scheme for solving flow equations on 3D unstructured grids. However, most of the implicit schemes produce greater numerical diffusion error than their corresponding explicit schemes. This stems from the fact that in linearizing implicit fluxes, it is conventional to replace the Jacobian matrix in t...

A Composite Finite Difference Scheme for Subsonic Transonic Flows (RESEARCH NOTE).

This paper presents a simple and computationally-efficient algorithm for solving steady two-dimensional subsonic and transonic compressible flow over an airfoil. This work uses an interactive viscous-inviscid solution by incorporating the viscous effects in a thin shear-layer. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a parabolic set of coupled, non-linear partial diff...

A well-balanced scheme for the Euler equation with a gravitational potential

The aim of this work is to derive a well-balanced numerical scheme to approximate the solutions of the Euler equations with a gravitational potential. This system admits an infinity of steady state solutions which are not all known in an explicit way. Among all these solutions, the hydrostatic atmosphere has a special physical interest. We develop an approximate Riemann solver using the formali...

A Second Order Well-Balanced Finite Volume Scheme for Euler Equations with Gravity

We present a well-balanced, second order, Godunov-type finite volume scheme for compressible Euler equations with gravity. By construction, the scheme admits a discrete stationary solution which is a second order accurate approximation to the exact stationary solution. Such a scheme is useful for problems involving complex equations of state and/or hydrostatic solutions which are not known in c...
